It's snowing today, and the whole country is going fucking mad. Half the people at work didn't show up today. Hundreds of schools are shut. Stansted is closed, and so was Gatwick for a while (but has subsequently reopened). All BA domestic flights are grounded. Rail travel is chaotic because of speed restrictions (what is an inch of snow going to do to a train???). People are urged to not drive unless they really have to; and then bring food, water, a blanket, a torch and a shovel if they go out. Last time it snowed, gridlock on the motorways was so bad people had to sleep in their cars.
This is not an arctic blizzard people, this barely qualifies as a flurry. If you look closely at the pictures, you'll see that there's still grass showing through the snow. Visibility is fine. There's no wind, no sleet, no ice. And using an umbrella in a mild flurry? priceless.
Pussies.
Reminds me of one time mum and I were visiting dad in Berlin. That was the one time we went by train, and the night before we were supposed to leave again, it snowed.
Not heavily. Just enough to powder the ground lightly. We're talking about maybe 1 cm of snow here.
…the town came to a standstill, at least during the earlier morning hours. Apparently, since they're not used to snow in the city, nobody has the tyres for it, etc., etc.
To this day, the memory of Berlin in the “snow” is the cause of much amusement in my family.

Hell, it's not just England. Toronto used to freak just as bad.
And here we are in Quebec, clearing 40 cm of snow and still all going to work, albeit a bit late.

One of my former classmates is moving to Hamilton in a few months. Yesterday he sent me this ad, which amused him greatly:
“Register Now! Become a Snow Angel!
Volunteer Hamilton in partnership with the City of Hamilton is offering a volunteer snow removal service for eligible seniors and persons with physical disabilities.”
Guess there are worse ways of becoming an angel…

This is what I think of when I hear snow angel…

…just what I said to him.
Makes it sound rather like a mafia threat: “Want to become a chalk outline on the floor?” – “Want to become a snow angel?”
