I was having a beer and a chin-wag with Colin when he pointed out the moon to me, over the alps and the lake. He said something that really struck a chord: for our kids, this view is a normal, everyday thing. They don’t realise that there are quite a few many places that are not as nice as this. He’s right, and for all of its idiosyncrasies, Switzerland has been good to us.

Living with my son
This! This! It’s like he sees into out house!
SO. MUCH. FLUFF.
Snow Leopards can’t roar like other big cats but they have the most majestic tails ever to compensate. Their tails are almost as long as they are – somewhere between 80 to 105 centimetres long! They are mainly used to help them balance, however, they can also serve as a perfect object to OM NOM NOM on!
It’s unknown exactly why snow leopards enjoy biting their enormous, fluffy tails. Some theories are that biting their tails helps keep them warm in the harsh cold of their natural environments. Others suggest that it’s simply a form of play behavior. Maybe it’s simply genetic, or maybe they just can’t resist the fluff? Just look at those tails.
Where do your news sources fall on the Media Bias chart?
I usually get my news either from the BBC or the Guardian, with the occasional op-ed or investigative report from the WaPo or the NY Times. I’ll sometimes read longer pieces from Slate, Vox or the New Yorker. My slant is definitively more liberal though, as the only time I give any thought to Fox, Drudge or InfoWars is to comment on how batshit-crazy they are. And sadly, that’s where a lot of people get their “news”, including the “Sentient caps-lock button” that is Trump.
Fuck you Trump(s)
John Moore, a Pulitzer Prize-winning photographer for Getty Images, has been photographing immigrants crossing the U.S.-Mexico border for years. This week one of his pictures became the most visible symbol of the immigration debate in America.
“This one was tough for me. As soon as it was over, they were put into a van. I had to stop and take deep breaths,” Moore said, describing his reaction to the scene of a two-year-old Honduran girl crying as her mother was being detained in McAllen, Texas. “All I wanted to do was pick her up. But I couldn’t.”
Edit: This shit writes itself. And it shouldn’t.
As the first lady boarded her plane from Andrews Air Force Base, she wore an olive green jacket. The back of the jacket read: “I really don’t care. Do u?” in white graffiti-style lettering. Trump was not wearing the jacket when she landed in McAllen, Texas. She re-donned the jacket and wore it when she deplaned back at Andrews Air Force Base despite the media storm that had erupted over her initial wearing.
The first lady’s team insisted that there was no hidden meaning behind the sartorial choice.
“It’s a jacket. There was no hidden message. After today’s important visit to Texas, I hope the media isn’t going to choose to focus on her wardrobe,” East Wing communications director Stephanie Grisham told CNN in a statement.
In case you ever wondered about Swiss garbage collection
This is how it’s done.
And now you know.
The things you find when you get lost
I’m still discovering new things at the NRC.
I’d already mentioned the journal library in the nuclear bunker. It’s good to know that if the world ends in a fiery ball of doom, I can always go and read back-issues of the German Journal of Milk Production from the 1950s.
The vault, though, is a new one. I’m actually really, really curious as to what’s inside, and who I could ask to find out :)
