As part of our lockdown entertainment, Katy and I have been binge watching our old movies. This weekend, they included gems like Beetlejuice, Running Man and Robocop. We have Top Gun, the Karate Kid, Beverly Hills Cop and Back to the Future in the lineup this week.

Bobbles celebrates Katy’s birthday
We walked into town to have a bit of quiet adult time. We met up with the oldies and youngun just before the movie – we’d booked to see the latest Star Wars and then we went to Wagamama’s for dinner. I got tots emosh with the movie. Now my belly is full and I’m enjoying coffee and a timbit because, random, a Tim Horton opened in Leicester. I just realized that between having found a source of poutine cheese in Switzerland and timbits in the UK, there’s no longer a need for me to go back to Canada!

Live action Ghost In the Shell
Mamoru Oshii, the director of the 1995 Japanese anime film “Ghost in the Shell,” praised Scarlett Johansson in a new featurette for the live action adaptation. “Scarlett Johansson, playing Motoko from beginning to end, has gone above and beyond my expectations for the role,” Oshii says in the clip released Thursday. “I’m sure this will be the most gorgeous film in the series so far,” he continues about the film’s cyberpunk visuals.
臨 兵 闘 者 皆 陣 列 在 前
Following my recent romp through ninja-themed memory lane, I give you this iconic scene from Enter the Ninja, the 1981 Golan/Globus action film that is often credited with starting the “Ninja Movie” craze of the 1980s.
The essence of the meaning of the ku-ji can be roughly translated as,
Taoist: “May all those who preside over warriors be my vanguard.”
Japanese: “Come warriors, fight as one, ready in formation, line up and take position in front. Destroy/victory!”
Rin (臨), Pyō (兵), Tō (闘), Sha (者), Kai (皆), Jin (陣), Retsu (列), Zai (在), Zen (前)
Ninjas, with lasers
I watched American Ninja tonight. It was so bad, it looped all the way back to good. Now ninja movies are a guilty pleasure that dates back know to when I was a kid.
This movie has all of the quintessential hallmarks of the 80s over acted action movie. The gung-ho black guy draped in bullets, the simpering damsel-in-distress love interest who gets slapped around a bit and keeps whining about her shoes (see also, Romancing the stone), the wooden, predictably, painfully stereotyped B-movie grade acting. Add badly choreographed ninja fight scenes, throw in frikkin’ lasers (dude!), a bad guy with a really fake french accent, and voilà! 80s cheesy goodness!
Can’t wait to download the sequels!
A good, brainless action movie
Paddington made me lol
Katy and I took the Bean to go see the new Paddington movie. I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised at how good and funny the movie was, with several genuine laugh out loud moments – one of which is depicted above. It’s a really good reboot to the franchise, and I hope they make more movies if they keep the same calibre.

I can’t feel my ass anymore!
Went to see Spider Man 2 at the Odéon in Leicester Square. WORST SEATS EVER! We were wedged in there so tightly it was painful to watch the movie. Makes Ryanair feel spacious by comparison! Good movie though. I much prefer this spiderman to Toby McGuire’s wishy-washy emo-fest. And also, Gwen Stacy is much hotter than Mary Jane.
